Soft Surface is an inhabitable robotic construct developed through computation, physical prototyping, testing, and human interaction. It is a composite layered surface that transforms into a roughly cylindrical, inhabitable room.
Soft Surface has an embodied agenda; one that suggests the potential to learn and adapt to new situations, and to suggest certain actions by human inhabitants. Soft Surface is a single surface material assembly, utilizing both material and digital programming to control sensing, actuation, interaction, and agenda. This 1:1 prototype consists of layers of sewn felt, embedded structure, custom flex and capacitive sensors, and custom fabricated pneumatic muscles. The project is controlled by an Arduino Mega and powered by an air compressor.
