lightwave

Cornell University Botanic Gardens, Ithaca, New York

An exterior installation and seating element with a landscape-inspired design, Lightwave aims to bring the art of spectacle into the utilitarian typology of public furniture. A grid of square timbers, resembling the piles of a pier, form an undulating wavelike surface. The surface’s crests and troughs provide a variety of seating alcoves, spaces for sitting, lying, lounging, climbing, and viewing.

Constructed of black locust, Lightwave is durable enough to last eighty years and will slowly age with the site from blonde to gray in color.
